          Often, the best first step when considering technology initiatives is to develop a strategic plan. The development of a strategic plan will articulate how technology can help your organization achieve its overall goals.

           

          Strategic Planning Case Study

          Common components and schedule for the development of a strategic plan

          A strategic plan can be broad or focused on a specific objective.

          Project Kickoff

          • Meet with the project steering committee to officially begin the project
          • Communicate with staff about the project

          Phase 1

           

          Read key documents

          • Organization Strategic Plan (if available)
          • Annual Reports
          • LSC Program Quality Visit Reports (if available)
          • Reports and metrics related to the specific goals of the strategic plan
          Meet with stakeholders
          • Meet with people at all levels of the organization (board members, senior leaders, managers, staff)
          • Meet with clients and people eligible for services
          • Meet with key community partners
          • Meet with pro bono volunteers

          Phase 2

           

          Based on findings in Phase 1 and the goals of the strategic plan, utilize the appropriate methods:

          • Surveys and additional interviews (as needed) with key internal and external personnel
          • Collect and read reports and best practices
          • Experiential learning (user studies, attend events/clinics, etc.)

          Phase 3

          • Develop a report that includes findings, analysis, and recommendations
          • Present the report to the steering committee and other personnel as desired

          Additional Items (optional)

          • Write a Request for Proposal (RFP) for implementation of selected initiatives

          • Create materials to assist with fundraising for technology implementation

          • Write a grant application
